How to Survive: An Earthquake

An earthquake can be a terrifying and dangerous natural disaster, but there are steps you can take to increase your chances of survival. Here's what to do during an earthquake:

  1. Drop, Cover, and Hold On: If you are indoors, drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture, and hold on to it until the shaking stops. If there is no nearby furniture, crawl into an interior corner and protect your head and neck with your arms.

  2. Stay Away from Windows: If you are near a window, move away from it to avoid being hit by broken glass.

  3. Evacuate Safely: If you are in a high-rise building, do not use elevators. Instead, use the stairs to evacuate the building.

  4. Avoid Power Lines: Stay away from power lines and electrical wires that may have fallen.

  5. Check for Injuries: If you or someone else has been injured, seek medical attention immediately.

  6. Be Prepared for Aftershocks: Earthquakes are often followed by aftershocks, so it's important to remain alert and cautious after the initial shaking has stopped.

  7. Prepare an Emergency Kit: Make sure you have an emergency kit that includes food, water, and first-aid supplies.

It's important to be prepared for an earthquake by knowing what to do during an earthquake, having an emergency plan in place, and regularly practicing earthquake drills with your family and coworkers. By following these tips, you can increase your chances of survival during an earthquake.
